The books that blew my mind 2024-2025 --> Ranked!

I missed my annual reading update...so what the hell, let's do it now!

To start, I've spent a lot of time in the last year and change, reading The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson. I really have enjoyed that series, but they are some loooonnnnggg books. I am currently still on Book 4.

On top of diving headlong into fiction, I've also spent some time revisiting one of my favorite books, Awareness by Anthony de Mello - in fact, I've read it twice because it is so calming (AR review here).

Beyond that I tried to read a wide variety, and there were some really great ones in the mix. I have more detailed reviews coming for the ones I haven't gotten to, but in the meantime...

Here they are (ranked):

  1. Israel: A Simple Guide to the Most Misunderstood Country on Earth by Noa Tishby (AR: 9 out of 10)
  2. *A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson (AR: 8.5 out of 10)
  3. The Bitcoin Standard by Saifedean Ammous (AR: 8.5 out of 10)
  4. The Myth of Normal by Gabor Matte (AR: 8 out of 10)
  5. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson (AR: 7.5 out of 10)
  6. The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene (AR: 7.5 out of 10)
  7. Benjamin Franklin: An American Life by Walter Isaacson (AR: 7.5 out of 10)
  8. Same as Ever by Morgal Housel (AR: 7 out of 10)
  9. Finding Your Own North Star by Martha Beck (AR: 7 out of 10)
  10. The Courage to Be Disliked by Fumitake Koga and Ichiro Kishimi (AR: 6 out of 10)

A man searching in a wild fantasy world

Most of my writing starts with a simple idea—an idea swirling around in my brain that wants to be put down on paper. I had an idea for an article - but when I did a Google search on the potential title I found that there were already many, MANY, similar articles on the same concept. I don't usually pre-search my idea to see what's out there, I just write what comes to mind and the article comes to fruition. And yet today I searched. And wow - there's so much out there! My article was already...

A brain exploding with ideas and craziness

Waking up lately is getting harder and harder. And it’s not that I am sleeping any worse than before…in fact sometimes I am sleeping better, but I am just so, so, so very tired. As any parent of two elementary-age children will tell you, parenting is NEVER-ENDING exhaustion. From the neediness to the attention-craving whining, crying, shouting, and laughing. It all compounds. Yet somehow, most of us parents managed to fool ourselves into thinking that it would be easy. But raising kids to be...

Man pondering life

I've been struggling to write lately. Heck, I've been struggling with the motivation to work on much of anything. At first, I couldn't put my finger on it. I mean, by all accounts, I AM living the dream: My kids are doing great. My wife is awesome. I work only a few hours a day on things that I have purposely chosen to work on. I am about as fit as I have ever been at 40. We've been taking amazing trips with our kids every year! By all extents and purposes, I am making the most out of most...
