The books that blew my mind 2024-2025 --> Ranked!

I missed my annual reading update...so what the hell, let's do it now!

To start, I've spent a lot of time in the last year and change, reading The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson. I really have enjoyed that series, but they are some loooonnnnggg books. I am currently still on Book 4.

On top of diving headlong into fiction, I've also spent some time revisiting one of my favorite books, Awareness by Anthony de Mello - in fact, I've read it twice because it is so calming (AR review here).

Beyond that I tried to read a wide variety, and there were some really great ones in the mix. I have more detailed reviews coming for the ones I haven't gotten to, but in the meantime...

Here they are (ranked):

  1. Israel: A Simple Guide to the Most Misunderstood Country on Earth by Noa Tishby (AR: 9 out of 10)
  2. *A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson (AR: 8.5 out of 10)
  3. The Bitcoin Standard by Saifedean Ammous (AR: 8.5 out of 10)
  4. The Myth of Normal by Gabor Matte (AR: 8 out of 10)
  5. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson (AR: 7.5 out of 10)
  6. The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene (AR: 7.5 out of 10)
  7. Benjamin Franklin: An American Life by Walter Isaacson (AR: 7.5 out of 10)
  8. Same as Ever by Morgal Housel (AR: 7 out of 10)
  9. Finding Your Own North Star by Martha Beck (AR: 7 out of 10)
  10. The Courage to Be Disliked by Fumitake Koga and Ichiro Kishimi (AR: 6 out of 10)

Carlsbad Sunset

Today, I celebrate my 5-year anniversary of leaving my CEO gig to retire early!!! Wow. Nuts. Insane. Just a few words that come to mind. Of course, my early retirement at times hasn’t FELT like retirement…especially during the many times when I’ve managed to overextend myself with side hustles. But then I go on a four-week trip, FORGET about everything, let automations do their thing, and all is well again… And that is exactly what I want to continue to do more of as I head into my 6th year...

A guy pulling slots in the casino

After a long, refreshing four-week vacation, I am back in action! I did my best to fully unplug from all my hobbies, side hustles, and worries. And honestly, I just feel incredibly lucky to even be in a position to take a four-week vacation. It got me thinking about luck….How did I get so lucky? Do we make our own luck? Do we simply just “get lucky?” Or are we, in a sense, born with it? Read the rest of the article at Accidentally Retired ***** AR Recommends Track your net worth with Empower...

A family taking an RV trip to a national park

Seriously….are they? Sometimes I do wonder… Especially when I see the family down the street pack up their RV to head out for a long weekend. Seeing that always makes me a bit jealous, even though I know that owning an RV would be a headache — not to mention that my family just went on a big trip out of the country a few months back. Or what about when I log onto Facebook or Instagram and see nothing but smiley faces, epic trips to exotic locations, or so-and-so’s recent promotion? It makes...
